How to Convert Image Format Online (Free)

Need to convert a PNG to JPG, swap a WebP for a PNG, or save a BMP as a modern format? Image format conversion is a common task — this guide shows you how to do it in seconds, directly in your browser, with no upload to any server.

Supported Formats

  • PNG — lossless, supports transparency. Best for screenshots, logos, icons.
  • JPEG — lossy, no transparency. Best for photographs. Smaller files than PNG.
  • WebP — modern format from Google. Smaller than both PNG and JPEG at similar quality. Supported in all modern browsers.
  • BMP — uncompressed bitmap. Rarely needed today, but useful for legacy software compatibility.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Open the Image Converter

Go to the Image Converter tool. It works in any modern browser without plugins.

2

Upload your image

Click the upload area or drag and drop your source image. PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, and GIF are all accepted as input.

3

Select the output format

Use the format selector to pick your target format: PNG, JPEG, WebP, or BMP. The choice appears immediately below the preview.

4

Preview the converted image

A preview of the converted image updates in real time. For JPEG and WebP, the default quality is 0.92 (92%) which preserves visual quality while reducing file size.

5

Download

Click Download. The converted image is generated in-browser and saved to your device. The filename reflects the new format automatically.

PNG vs JPG vs WebP — Which to Choose?

  • Keep transparency → PNG. JPG and WebP (at lossy quality) do not support transparent backgrounds. If your image has a transparent background, PNG is the safe choice.
  • Photographs for the web → WebP or JPEG. WebP gives 25–35% smaller files than JPEG at equal quality. Use WebP for modern web projects; fall back to JPEG if you need broad compatibility.
  • Icons and logos → PNG or SVG. For crisp edges at any size, vector SVG is ideal. For raster logos, PNG preserves sharp edges better than JPEG.
