Common use cases

Inline images in CSS

Embed small icons and logos directly in CSS background-image properties to eliminate HTTP requests.

HTML email images

Some email clients block external images. Embed small images as Base64 data URLs to guarantee they render.

Single-file HTML pages

Create fully self-contained HTML files by embedding all images as Base64 data URLs — no external dependencies.

API image payloads

Many APIs accept images as Base64-encoded strings in JSON payloads instead of multipart form data.

Frequently asked questions

What file types are supported?

Any image format the browser can decode: PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, ICO.

Is there a file size limit?

Large images produce very large Base64 strings. Images over ~1MB are not recommended for inline use — the data URI becomes unwieldy. Use Base64 encoding for small images (icons, logos).

What is a data URL?

A data URL is a URI scheme that embeds file data directly: data:[mediatype];base64,[data]. Browsers treat it like a normal URL but read the data locally.

Does my image get uploaded?

No. FileReader.readAsDataURL() is a browser API that reads the file locally. Your image is never transmitted anywhere.
